I spent the fourth of July at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia for a quick midweek getaway!

Hope you had a great fourth of July! Did you do anything fun? Midweek holidays tend to be a bit strange – do you take another day off and travel somewhere? Or have friends over for some poolside grilling?
My mom and I snuck off to visit some family up at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. Smith Mountain Lake is a fantastic lake not far from Roanoke. It’s a great getaway spot, out of the way but not too hard to get to!
I’d forgotten how much I love lakes! I will always be first and foremost a beach girl, but I love how peaceful things are at the lake. The water is the perfect temperature – not warm, but not cold either – and it doesn’t take much completely relax. There is nothing so lovely as sitting in a floatie with a cold drink in your hand for an afternoon.
When we got tired of lazing around, my cousins and I took turns on kayaks and paddle boards to go exploring!
My uncle Ken took us out on the boat. What’s more Americana than being out on a boat on the fourth of July? Being out with the boat while tubing on a hot dog. Yes, you read that right: we rode a tube shaped like a hot dog! You sit on it, a bit like being on a horse, instead of lying down. It was hilarious and fun and we only got thrown off twice.
I love the shoreline here – it’s beautiful and peaceful, and reminds me a bit of Scotland’s shoreline on a smaller scale.
You can’t have a fourth of July without fireworks. We shot a few off in the street nearby, and they were amazing! I love the magic of fireworks.
Happy birthday America! Thanks for gifting us with a weekend away midweek!
How did you spend the fourth of July??
