I’ve never been so in touch with super-seasonal food as when I moved to Italy. You no kidding cannot find certain produce if it’s not being harvested within 50 miles of you at that moment.
The advantage of this is FLAVOR. Vegetables are packed with more flavor than I’ve ever tasted.
It also means that you learn to eagerly anticipate the moment when things come into season. And right now, it’s figs!
Figs are delicious straight off the tree. You can just pop them in your mouth as a snack or dessert for a perfect bite of sweetness.
I wanted to put together a sweet and tangy appetizer with figs. Something with little to no cooking, because it’s too hot for that mess right now. And here’s what I came up with!
These fig crostini topped with goat cheese and caramelized onion are delicious and so easy! They’re perfect as an appetizer or light lunch. The tang of the goat cheese and smokiness of the onions round out the sweetness of the figs.
Pair with an Hugo spritz for the perfect Italian apertivo!
If you’re like me and trying not to use heat whenever you can help it, use a toaster or a grill the bread. I like the grill better, but toaster means almost no additional heat in the house, so your call.
My love of caramelized onions is no secret. They’re a great thing to make every so often and put on everything for that week – sandwiches, burgers, side dishes, whatever! They add a great smoky-sweet flavor layer.
These were the first figs of summer here in Italy, meaning I didn’t get to pick their size. This time, these babies were HUGE! Normally I prefer smaller ones, where you can cut them in slices and pop them straight on. But if you get giant ones, just cut them into chunks.
They’ll come together in five minutes for a perfect little appetizer bite!
Tools you’ll need: knife, cutting board.
