Castillo San Filepe del Morro, or El Morro, is the Spanish colonial fort built on the tip of San Juan harbor. Built in the 16th century, it’s now open to the public as a National Park. When Logan and I found ourselves with an extra hour in San Juan, we headed straight up to El Morro to do some exploring!

Like everything else in old San Juan, the architecture is beautiful. I don’t typically imagine forts as aesthetically appealing, but this one certainly is. The whole city used to be walled which means there’s not a clear delineation where the walls of the fort begin and the city walls end.

The entrance price is pretty cheap: $5 per person gets you into all the locations that comprise the San Juan National Historic Site. It includes another fort, Castillo San Cristobal, as well, but we only had time for one this trip. Another perk is that your entrance fee is good for a week! So you don’t have to squeeze it all in one day.

As you walk up, there’s a massive field where locals and tourists alike were soaking in the sunshine, flying kites and catching up with friends. Who can resist that gorgeous blue sky??

 

It feels hard to believe that this is part of the national parks system. I usually picture camping, woods, and rustic buildings. This is definitely not that. There are old buildings, but they have a decidedly older feel than most other national historic sites in the States.  I loved it!
