It has been a minute since I’ve shared a DIY over here!

Some backstory: I’ve always had weirdly sensitive skin. Sometimes for no reason, my legs get super itchy. As in, feels like I’ve got poison ivy all over my legs. It’s bad. Over the years I’ve managed to get it under control by being choosy about what soaps and lotions I use, but it still flares up occasionally.

One thing I’ve found that helps is keeping my legs exfoliated well, but the flip side is sometimes it makes it worse before it’s better. Chemical exfoliants make it worse. What helps most is physically scrubbing off excess crud and dead cells off my skin.

I quickly realized that to get what I needed (no weird chemicals or ingredients) I should make my own.

At this point I need to confess something: it’s possible that I’m THE LAST PERSON IN THE WORLD to get into essential oils. And by “get into,” I mean “buy a cheap diffuser and a starter pack of oils.” I’d already been thinking about checking it out [insert the 578924789 reasons they’re good for you here] but hadn’t pulled the trigger. When I realized that it wasn’t much more money to buy an 8 oil kit than one bottle of lavender, I went for it! I did a bit of reading and really like the ones I chose. So if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to experiment with essential oils, try these with this diffuser!

Anyway, back to sugar scrubs. I opted for a lavender scent because I love the relaxing scent and the spa-like quality it adds my shower.

One note: I used generic brand food coloring. If you’re aiming for a truly clean product, omit this or substitute a more natural version. They don’t bother my skin at all and I wanted to give it a cute color, so I added it!

DIY Sugar Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups sugar
  • 3-4 drops lavender essential oil
  • food coloring (optional)

Steps:

  1. Put the coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for about 20 seconds. You want the coconut oil to be liquid but not hot. If it’s warm, the sugar will partially melt into the coconut oil, losing the texture that makes it!
  2. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of sugar, the lavender oil, and food coloring. I used two drops of blue and two drops of red to get a purple.
  3. Stir until the food coloring is evenly distributed.

I let mine sit overnight before using it to make sure everything combined well. Put it in some cute jars and it’ll make a great hostess gift too!
